Boiler tips before you book a repair - heating engineer at work

No heating or hot water

Check whether the boiler display is on, whether your thermostat is calling for heat and whether other gas appliances are working. If there is any smell of gas, turn the gas off, ventilate the property and call the emergency gas number before arranging a repair.

Low boiler pressure

Many boilers stop working when pressure drops too low. Look for the pressure gauge and note the reading, but only top up the system if you know the correct filling-loop process for your model.

Radiators cold at the top

Air trapped in radiators can stop heat circulating properly. Bleeding radiators may help, but repeated air in the system can point to a leak, corrosion or pressure issue that needs checking.

Boiler making banging or whistling noises

Unusual noises can come from trapped air, poor circulation, scale build-up or pump issues. Switching the system off and booking a check is usually safer than waiting for the sound to get worse.

Error code on the display

Take a photo of the code before resetting anything. A reset may get the boiler running briefly, but the code gives useful clues for proper fault finding.

Repeated lockouts

If the boiler keeps needing a reset, treat it as a fault rather than a nuisance. Repeated lockouts often mean the system is protecting itself from an underlying problem.
